Peake attended San Fernando High School from 1925 to 1928. His art teacher was the noted photographer and artist Barbara Morgan. Morgan recognized Peake’s talent and took an interest in him. Without his knowledge, she entered his work in a competition for a scholarship at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.
