Nov 09, 2011 · Silhouette of Ken Sykora aged 4, made by artist Peggy Newall in 1927. The artist may have worked with Baron Scotford in London and Ludlow in the 20s and 30s. She was also part of 'The Mayfair Artists' who worked across the big department stores around Christmas time. In the summer they moved to the popular holiday resorts doing silhouette portraits for holidaymakers.Views: 783

She was born on February 13, 1759 in Elizabethtown, NJ. (Although Charles Willson Peale is not known to have started cutting silhouettes until 1802, he was born 18 years earlier than De Hart, in Chestertown, MD in 1741.) De Hart’s earliest discovered silhouette was cut when she was twelve years old, in 1771.

Another 20th century artist of note (and well represented in my collection!) is Baron Scotford, an American artist who spent much of his life cutting silhouettes in England. I also have works by Elizabeth Baverstock, Peggy Newell, Arthur Forrester & Rex Cowgill. You will meet these artists, as well as other favourite artists, later in the tour!
