He studied at the Chicago Art Institute graduating with a BFA in 1956. He currently teaches ceramic sculpture at Greenwich House Pottery and has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, University of Southern Maine, Skowhegan School in Maine, the Massachusetts College of Art, Louisiana State University, Cranbrook Academy, Kent State University, and School of Visual Arts.
