One of a family of five painters, Abraham Pether was born in Chichester in 1756, the son of the mezzotinter, William Pether. He was a pupil of George Smith, one of the three Smith brothers who were notable landscape painters. He initially painted in his tutor s style, then developed it further by incorporating some elements of Richard Wilson.

Jan 09, 2020 · I am sure this is 'Pether family': its just a matter of resolving which one. Copying the image and enlarging does not bear out there being either a signature (or a duck) lower left, unless under the edge of the frame: what looks like an inscription - which the collection would long ago have taken note of it it was - is part of the dark reflection of a tree from the rippling water.

While there were at least three known 19th century painters named Pether -- Abraham and Henry were two others -- this painting is by far most consistent with Sebastian's work. Small and thin 3/4" tear in center with minor loss. Measures about 25" x 30" in 29-1/4" x 34-1/2" gilt frame.
