Jul 10, 2013 · If you have an adjustment layer (like curves, levels, etc.) highlighted in the layers pallet, practically all the filters will be greyed out, because you can't apply a filter to an adjustment layer (though you could select the filter's mask and apply the filter, but it may not give the effect you expect).

Jul 15, 2012 · For some reason recently the Artistic/Brush strokes/sketch etc Filters menu is missing from the filters menu (not greyed out, but completely missing) in CS2, but not in Image ready. I've searched around alot but I can only find fixes for the "greyed out filters in Lab/16bit/CMYK" etc, but as I'm using RGB and 8bit this doesn't solve my problem.

Aug 01, 2014 · The Filter Gallery (and all other entries for it) will be grayed out if your document is not in a color mode and depth that Filter Gallery can work with. The Filter Gallery filters only support RGB and Grayscale, in 8 bit/channel. And all of this is documented in the online help.

May 06, 2011 · I've just noticed that the following filters in CS5's filter panel are grayed out, and therefore not accessible: Filter Gallery; Artistic; Brush Strokes; Distort; Pixelate; Sketch; Texture; Digimarc. I know that I have used some of these in the past, and have no idea when or how they came to be grayed out.
