He came as a boy when his parents bought a guest house in St Ives. His desire to make his life that of a painter was ignited by the sight of a huge Patrick Heron canvas on a visit to the Penwith Society in the early 60’s.

William F. Piper was a resident of Newlyn, who was exhibiting in St. Ives in the late 1930s, according to the Cornwall Artists' Index. He specialised in painting coastal scenes in Cornwall and there is one of his paintings in the National Collection at the Royal Cornwall Museum.

John Piper was born at Epsom in Surrey, 1903. Following his father’s wishes, he spent 5 years in the family law firm before pursuing art, firstly at Richmond School of Art and then at the Royal College of Art. In the 1930s Piper exhibited abstract pictures and constructions, then reverted to creating landscape and architectural images, developing the picturesque style that features in his later work.
