Robert Adamson was one of the first professional photographers, setting up in business in Edinburgh in March 1843. He had aspired to be an engineer but his health was too poor. His brother, John, who was involved in the early experiments with photography in St Andrews, taught him the calotype process.

Robert Adamson had a Callotype studio at Rock House, Edinburgh. In 1843 he began a partnership with David Octavius Hill lasting until 1847. In 1845 the pair exhibited ten calotypes at the Royal Scottish Academy. Hill's projects to publish their work were not realised due to the ill health of Adamson, who died in January 1848.
