Seattle artist Robert C. Jones taught at the UW School of Art for 35 years. He continued his daily studio practice in Seattle through his 88 years of life. Robert C. Jones’ career spanned over 50 years, and he exhibited extensively in the pacific northwest, most notably including Cornish College of the Arts, Tacoma Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Whatcom Museum of History and Art, Museum of Northwest Art, and Hallie Ford Museum of Art.

After moving to Seattle in 1960 to teach at the University of Washington School of Art, Robert C. Jones established himself as one of the Northwest’s most prominent abstract painters. A superb colorist, Jones bases his compositions on the curves of the human form and simple geometries of the landscape, brushing and scraping layers of pigment to create complex, gestural, energized surfaces.

Robert C. Jones was born in West Hartford, CT, in 1930. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design, receiving a BFA (1953) and an MS (1959). In 1963, Jones moved to Seattle with his wife, painter Fay Jones, to join the faculty of the University of Washington School of Art. He retired in 2001.

Jan 12, 2019 · The School of Art + Art History + Design is sad to announce the passing of Painting Professor Emeritus Robert C. Jones on December 23, 2018. He joined the School faculty in 1960 and taught until his retirement in 1995. Jones was well-respected as an artist and educator.
