Robert Campbell Jr was among the first wave of urban-based Aboriginal artists who rose to prominence in the late 1980s. His career was cut short by his death in 1993 at the age of 49, highlighting the short life expectancy of many Aboriginal men due to poor health and poverty.

Campbell also painted Arcadian scenes of camp life, of food gathering and of Paradise lost, as in Sunset over the Macleay overlooking Euroka, 1990. In all his works, the picture surface is animated by vivid decoration that recalls possum-skin cloaks and the fine engravings on Aboriginal shields, clubs and boomerangs of south-eastern Australia.

Robert Campbell Jnr was primarily a self-taught painter who emerged during the 1980s as an extremely important Indigenous artist. Campbell’s striking, dynamic paintings are based on the patterning, colours and stylistic conventions of traditional Ngaku designs. They tell the story of his Ngaku people, entwined with the politics surrounding Aboriginal rights at that time.

Robert Campbell Jr (1944-93), Ngaku painter and printmaker was born at Kempsey on the mid north coast of New South Wales and grew up in close contact with the bush and coastline. He first learnt to draw while still at primary school on Burnt Bridge Mission by producing images of birds and animals in pencil on his father’s carved boomerangs.
