Robert Nanteuil, (born 1623/30, Reims, France—died December 9, 1678, Paris), the outstanding French portrait engraver of his age, whose achievement resulted in the elevation of engraving from a humble craft to a fine art. He became known by his crayon portraits and was pensioned by Louis XIV and appointed designer and engraver of the cabinet to that monarch.

Birth of Robert Nanteuil in Reims, France, the son of Nicole Dizy and Lancelot Nanteuil, a wool merchant. c. 1642-43 Nanteuil starts training with the engraver and etcher Nicolas Regnesson (c. 1616-1670), while studying rhetoric at the Benedictine school of the Abbey of Saint-Remi. 1645
