McGhie was a celebrated seascape artist, and became known as an accomplished portraitist in the early 1910s. His work was widely exhibited in both Glasgow and London, and the artist first participated in a Royal Academy exhibition in 1911. McGhie enjoyed great success throughout his long career.

McGhie then studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts and travelled in Europe and Italy in particular. McGhie would have been familiar with the social realism of artists like Léon-Augustin Lhermitte (1844-1925)🎨 and the ‘plein air’ school of painting, together with the later work of the Impressionists and their followers, figures that were to prove influential in his work.

McGhie also showed at the RSA, RA, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, RSW, elsewhere in the English provinces and abroad. Public collections in Glasgow and Liverpool acquired his works. His An East Coast Fishing Village was offered from the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation collection by Christie’s, South Kensington, in 2002.
