Sir Roland Penrose, in full Roland Algernon Penrose, (born October 14, 1900, London, England—died April 23, 1984, Farley Farm House, near Chiddingly, East Sussex), British artist, collector, and writer known best for his curatorial work and promotion of modern and contemporary artists. Penrose attended Queens’ College, Cambridge, and earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1922.

Roland Penrose was born on October 14, 1900, in St. Johns Wood, London. He was a leading Surrealist who, in addition to painting, was active as a writer, gallerist, curator and collector. After studying architecture at Queens' College, Cambridge, Penrose decided to become a painter and in 1922 he moved to Paris to study with André Lhote.
