Rosemaling is an art style preserved thanks in part to 19th century immigration from Norway’s farming communities to those of Wisconsin. In the 1600’s Norwegians began painting their soot stained walls and furniture with artistic designs inspired by summer flowers and tumbling waterfalls. Often isolated by their geography, regions developed their own identity through their arts. Bunads (the national folk dress), wood carving, and painting (rosemaling) developed to show regional preferences.
