History or description: The society began as the Birmingham Society of Artists in 1821. While a larger building was being erected in New Street to house the Society in 1829, the 'artists professionally engaged seceded and formed an exhibiting society which is now the Royal Society of Artists, the royal permission having been obtained in 1868.
