The artisan community was founded by Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) in 1895, and those involved became known as the Roycrofters. For Hubbard the name was reminiscent of European guilds that emphasized skill and design. Even the logo used by the Roycroft artisans to signify the high quality of craftmanship looked to historical traditions.
