Gannett was born in Santa Ana, California and attended the University of California at Berkeley, and later the Art Students League. She married her second husband, Lewis Stiles Gannett, in 1931. Her illustrations for John Steinbeck’s Tortilla Flat brought her national recognition in 1935.

Ruth Chrisman obtained an M.A. degree at the University of California in 1920. She wed Lewis Gannett in 1931 and began a career as an illustrator of children's books.
