He chauffeured and made furniture before working for DeWitt Chatham Hanes. Then, in his late sixties, he picked up a paintbrush and hardly let it rest.

He moved to Winston-Salem in 1977 and worked for DeWitt Chatham Hanes, who encouraged him to pursue painting. He became a prolific artist and his work has been exhibited in the Outsider Art Fair in New York City, museums in North Carolina, Texas, and elsewhere, as well as the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum.

Sam Shapiro Sam Shapiro hails from Winston-Salem, NC. He began his ballet training at Wake Forest University under the direction of his mother, Brantly Shapiro.
