Sam Ragan was Poet Laureate of North Carolina from 1982 until his death in 1996. He was inducted into the NC Literary Hall of Fame in 1997. Subsequently, to commemorate Sam, the North Carolina Poetry Society changed the name of its annual June poetry festival to the Sam Ragan Poetry Festival.
