Artist and art historian Samella Lewis is renowned for her contributions to African American art and art history. Born on February 27, 1924, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Lewis's heritage led her to view art as an essential expression of the community and its struggles. Lewis began her art career as a student at Dillard University, where she was instructed by the African American sculptor Elizabeth Catlett.

In 2007, Scripps launched the Samella Lewis Contemporary Art Collection in honor of Samella Lewis, artist, art historian, curator, editor and teacher at Scripps from 1969-1984. Known for her trailblazing art history, Dr. Lewis wrote the first textbook on African American art history, as well as monographs on leading artists Elizabeth Catlett and Richmond Barthé.
