Calvert, an English wood-engraver and painter, was associated with William Blake and the Shoreham circle of the Ancients. He was inspired by Blake's illustrations of Virgil, though his pastoral visions were inspired by Theocritus and other pagan idylls rather than Milton or Bunyan.
