Selma Makela is situated between West Yorkshire and the West of Ireland. Her work has been exhibited at the RHA Royal Academy, RUA Royal Ulster Academy, RWA Royal West Academy, PEER London, and is held in private collections across England, Ireland and Canada and in The Mayo County Council and Galway City Council Ireland. Selma Makela is a recipient of a 2012 Arts council Artist’s Bursary. She has also received awards from Galway County Council, the Arts Council, the Fleck Fellowship and was a prize winner in the 2007 Claremorris Open. Makela is a graduate of GMIT and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in DIT.

Selma Makela was born in London and has lived in the west of Ireland since the late 80s. She was a prizewinner in the Claremorris Open Exhibition in 2007 and selected again in 2008. Also this year she has shown at Galway Arts Centre and had a solo exhibition at the Ballina Arts Centre.

In discussing her work on this innovative project, entitled ‘Sowing a Seed: Archives to Art’, artist Selma Makela described her process as a form of ‘deep mapping’ that considered the multiple, evolving meanings that adhere to places, and the range of memories and thoughts that are associated with them which cannot be conveyed through conventional map making alone.
