This image by the artist Georges Goursat (1863-1934) who painted using the name SEM, shows an imagined view of the coastline partially obstructed by the lush foliage to be seen in Cannes. The bold letters, CANNES, imply the prominence and importance of the area. SEM was known as a caricaturist as well as an illustrator.

"Around 1890 Georges Goursat began to use the moniker “Sem” when signing his work. He was invited to Paris in March 1900 by Jean Lorrain, mainly to work in the studio of Cheret. In Paris, Sem lived on the Rue de Vaugirard and he found his artistic inspiration in visiting the racetracks of Paris, where he watched the members of the Jockey Club at play.
