May 27, 2013 · By changing the lines, Boyle made the face of the baby girl grow seamlessly into a girl, then an adolescent, a lovely young woman, then someone older, more matronly, a face subjected to the universal effects of time and experience. The way Boyle manipulated the image with the most simple, deft and confident of brushstrokes was exhilarating to watch.

Artist Statement. As a child I created art to escape reality, as an adult to challenge it. The themes and ideas I have always been engaged with include childhood, family, nature, sexuality, gender, alienation, birth and death. Drawing from personal mythology I invent a visual language that describes the unsettling experiences of being human.

Artist’s Statement. In 2017 Boyle was working on a collaborative sculpture with Drag acrylic nail-art superstar Justin Cappelletti of Pinky’s Nails. Centaur is a dreamy watercolour made in her Toronto studio, inspired by an outsider’s imagination of the tropics at sunset. An ungendered voyeur with a fantastic manicure spies through the underbrush on a mysteriously bound centaur.

About Shary Boyle Shary Boyle is a Toronto-based artist who works across diverse media, including ceramics, sculpture, painting, installation, and drawing. She represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 2013, and has held solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Power Plant, the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia.
