Sir Charles John Holmes, KCVO (11 November 1868, Preston, Lancashire – 7 December 1936, Kensington, London) was a British painter, art historian and museum director. His writing on art combined theory with practice, and he was an expert on the painting techniques of the Old Masters, from whose example he had learned to draw and paint.

Artist associated with 4 portraits In the 1890s Holmes was a prolific etcher, influenced by Charles Ricketts. He was the second editor of the Burlington (1903-1909) and Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford (1904-1910). As editor he initiated the Burlington's tradition of campaigning editorials on political issues in the art world.

Charles John Holmes was Director of the National Portrait Gallery, before moving next door to become the sixth Director of the National Gallery. Holmes was born on 11 November 1868 in Preston. After pursuing his studies at Eton and Oxford, he moved into publishing while at the same time developing his skills as a painter and art historian.
