William Coldstream William Menzies Coldstream was born in Belford, Northumberland, the youngest of five children of a doctor. The family moved to West Hampstead, London in 1910. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art after failing to matriculate from medical school.

Ian went to Stowe School on an art scholarship, and then briefly to Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, before studying economics at Trinity College, Cambridge. After the war, he joined the staff of the Slade School of Fine Art, becoming a close friend of Sir William Coldstream. In 1975 Ian moved to Camberwell as principal.
