In 1918 William Orpen was Knighted for his contribution to the war effort. However, his experience of the war had an adverse effect on him and he while he continued to paint for many years after, he drowned out the horror with Whiskey and he died in 1931 of liver and heart failure (age 53).

Sir William Newenham Montague Orpen(1878 – 1931), Biography. William was born in Stillorgan, County Dublin and went on to become a draughtsman and painter in the run up to World War I. During the War, Orpen was drafted as an official War Artist, and travelled to the Western Front where he painted and drew dead soldiers, prisoners of war and official portraits.
