Nevertheless, the dissident artists and writers were very influential among the intellectual class in Russia and played an important role in the eventual unraveling of the Soviet Union. These paintings were acquired from the artists in Moscow over a two year period, 1967-1969, during my tenure as a diplomat at the U.S. Embassy there.
