Stanley was born in Cookham. Berkshire and studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts. In 1914 he began his service with the Royal Army Medical Corps and was sent to Greece under the command of the 68th Field Ambulance Unit. He served as a War Artist in World War II, and produced the well known ship building on the Clyde.
