Feb 02, 2021 · Lopes’ father left his small impoverished island of Filicudi in the Aeolian Islands to reach Sydney in 1962. He was a crane driver at Cockatoo Island dockyard in Sydney for more than fifteen years. Lopes adds, ‘My father couldn’t read very well, and at eight I was teaching him how to use the gears from the crane driver’s manual.’
