George Stubbs (August 25, 1724 - July 10, 1806) was a self-taught British artist known for his exquisite paintings of horses informed by an intensive study of the animal's anatomy. Biography Stubbs was born in Liverpool in 1724, the son of John Stubbs and his wife, Mary. At the age of fifteen he was apprenticed to Hamlet Winstanley, a former friend of Arthur Devis, but left him after only a few weeks. Apparently self-taught, he practiced as a portrait painter in various northern centers, settling in York about 1745.

Biography. George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the eighteenth century such as Reynolds or Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy.
