Born in Milwaukee in 1940 into a family of architects, Ted Rose became enamorated with railroads at the 1949 Chicaog Railroad Fair. By 1956, he had won an art contest. Between 1956 and 1962 he traveled extensively in North America, following the last of steam. He worked summers in the art department of Kalmbach Publishing Co.
