The Third Mind refers to a “cut-ups” work by Beat writers William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin, whose cult of spontaneity in art and life drew inspiration from Asian attitudes. This manuscript composed of random texts and images evokes the eclectic yet purposeful method by which American artists often appropriated material from Asia to create new forms, structures, and meanings in their work.

The Third Mind is a wonderful exploration of Asian influence on American artists. It touched on several areas I had not considered. It was a good read to prepare for viewing the exhibition.5/5

The Third Mind: America Contemplates Asia. At the very start of "The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia," the Guggenheim offers three visions of silence and excess. Only which is which, and do any of these visions derive from Asia? I am myself of two minds—or is it three?

It is fitting that Alexandra Munroe’s tour de force exhibition "The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia 1860-1989" begins with Whistler, who "utilized East Asian motifs in his work," as she notes in her fine historical overview of "Orientalism" in art and literature.
