A younger brother of the polished Irish landscape painter Thomas Roberts (1749-78), Thomas Sautelle Roberts - named Sautelle after the Huguenot side of his mother's family, while he himself took the name Thomas after the untimely death of his brother in 1778 - was one of a group of native Irish landscape artists to emerge in the late eighteenth century.

Landscape Painter From A Dictionary of Irish Artists 1913 A younger brother of Thomas Roberts (q.v.), being a son of John Roberts, architect, and Mary Susanna Sautelle, he was born in Waterford about 1760. He became a pupil in the Dublin Society's Schools in 1777 and won a medal there in 1779.

In 1772 Thomas Roberts exhibited three works of the demesne of Lucan at the Society of Artists in Ireland in their purpose-built exhibition in William Street. These were among Roberts's most popular works and today a total of seven works related to the commission survive, most notably the exquisite quartet in the National Gallery of Ireland.
