Timothy R. Thies was born in Boone, Iowa, and at age eight he was introduced to the works of Andrew and N.C. Wyeth, which triggered a lifelong fascination with art. He studied at the Colorado Institute of Art, but his painting career began in earnest with a scholarship to study with Nelson Shanks at the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Art in New York City.
