The Tingatinga Arts Cooperative Society The Tanzanian Tingatinga painting style was founded in the late 1960's by the autodidact Edward Saidi Tingatinga. Being unemployed in the city of Dar es Salaam he started to paint animals, plants and village scenes on chipboards with bicycle paint.

Tinga Tinga paintings are part of the Ndonde mural art tradition. The Ndonde people decorate their huts with various pictures of animals and figures until today. In 1972, in the midst of a burgeoning artistic career, Edward Tingatinga was shot dead by police in a case of mistaken identity. His fellow artists in Dar formed the Tinga Tinga Arts Cooperative Society in his name, and the style he originated became a school of painting for artists from Dar and Zanzibar.
