Thomas William Roberts, artist and photographer, was born in Dorchester, Dorset, England on 8 March 1856. He was the son of Richard Roberts, editor of the Dorset County Chronicle and Cela Matilda Roberts, nee Evans. In the 1860's he attended Hardye's Grammar School in Dorchester.
