Tory Island is the most remote inhabited island off the Irish coast. The artist Derek Hill first went there in the mid 1950’s after a chance encounter with the lighthouse keeper. He wanted somewhere dramatically beautiful to paint and he found it on Tory. The story goes that one-day Hill was painting on Tory Island when a cantankerous old man, looking over his shoulder, said “I could do better if I tried”.

Oct 20, 2017 · The Tory Island Artists. James Dixon (1887 – 1970) was among the first group of painters on the island. He impressed Derek Hill with his original work using household paints and other simple materials. Inspired by Derek Hill, the group eventually expanded to include James brother Johny Dixon, Jimi Yank Rodgers, Ruari Sarah Rodgers and Patsy Dan Rodgers – the present King of Tory Island.

Spurred on by James Dixon’s success, other islanders began to paint, the best known are Patsy Dan Rodgers (the King of Tory), Ruairí Rodgers and Anton Meenan, all of whom have painted consistently for many decades now. These islanders artists have created a unique and fascinating record of their small community and Tory Island life for over fifty years.

Gailearaí Dixon. Encouraged by Derek Hill, four islanders began to paint in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Knowing little about art and often lacking the most basic equipment, they painted in a style which was termed naive or primitive. A second generation of Tory painters -Patsy Dan Mac Ruairí, Ruairi L. Mac Ruaidhrí, Micheál Fionnbar Mac Ruaidhrí and Antóin Ó Mionáin emerged in the 1970s and 1980s.
