Auguste Rodin was born into humble beginnings in Paris, France, in 1840. After failing to excel academically he was sent to a boarding school run by an uncle in Beauvais but Rodin's shy nature and shortsightedness meant that he could still barely read and write by the time he left in 1854. Rodin's working methods combined a passionate response to the human body, and a delight in free, spontaneous drawing and modelling, with tight control over a large productive workshop.
