Gunther Uecker was born in Wendorf, Mecklenburg. In 1956 he began using nails (the hammering kind) in his art. Gunther Uecker joined together with the art group which propagated the beginning of the art made in opposition to the German Informal. He used the medium of light in his artwork.

Günther Uecker was born in 1930 in Wendorf, Germany. Studying painting at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee from 1949 to 1953, he left East Germany for the West, where he further pursued his artistic training from 1955 through 1958 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

After the war, Uecker’s family’s farmland was appropriated under the GDR regime and the young (now) East German trained as a propaganda artist until 1953, when he moved to West Berlin after the June Uprising. There he studied painting at the art school in Berlin-Weißensee.
