The Vigeland Museum's collection comprises 1 600 sculptures, 12 000 drawings and 400 woodcuts, in addition to pastels, wrought iron works and wood carving works. The collection is the result of an agreement Gustav Vigeland made with the City of Oslo in 1919. He donated all his art to the municipality; in return a studio was built for him.

Gustav Vigeland, in full Adolf Gustav Vigeland, (born April 11, 1869, Mandal, Norway—died March 12, 1943, Oslo), Norwegian sculptor who was best known for creating an outdoor sculpture complex in Frogner Park, Oslo. Vigeland, whose father was a carpenter, was apprenticed to a wood-carver in 1884.
