Sir William Gillies is still highly underrated in Modern British terms. Born in Haddington, he trained and taught at Edinburgh College of Art, and did the latter as principal. He was a great influence on many of the next generation of the Edinburgh School.

Born in Haddington near Edinburgh, Gillies studied at Edinburgh College of Art. After graduating, he taught there for more than forty years until his retirement as Principal in 1966, having influenced several generations of artists. A college grant enabled Gillies to go to Paris in 1923 to study, and for a brief period he worked in a cubist style.

Gillies was one of the original members of the Westport Artists (in Connecticut) in the 50s. He also established the Portrait Group of Westport, Connecticut. William Gillies did cover jacket work in New York City while living in Westport, Connecticut. He then moved to Hilton Head and specialized in animal portraits (horses and dogs).
