Lot Notes Born in New York in 1827, William Lewis Marple first traveled west to seek his fortune during the 1849 Gold Rush. A self-taught artist, he soon found painting to be financially lucrative and opened a studio at 432 Montgomery Street in San Francisco, becoming one of the early prominent landscape painters in the city.
