William Perring Hollyer was born in Dover in 1834, the first son who survived beyond early childhood of Joseph Hollyer and Amelia Perring Mannings. Joseph was a Herald Painter by trade (painting coats of arms on the carriages of the gentry), so this is perhaps where William got his artistic skills from.

He was born in London in 1871, the son of W.P. Hollyer the renowned Scottish painter of cattle and sheep and the brother of Eva Hollyer a well known figure painter.
