Painter of the American West, writer. Leigh’s love of nature was kindled during his youth in W. Va. Reputedly, he was a direct descendant of Pocahontas, and his interest in Native American life was sparked by his legacy. William R. Leigh (1866 –1955) was born at Maidstone Manor Farm, West Virginia in Berkeley County. He was an artist who specialized in Western scenes. He entered the Maryland Institute in 1880, and then attended the Royal Academy in Munich.
