PONCA CITY (AP) Otoe-Missouria Indian artist Walt Harris has died after a short illness. He was 62. Often called the Happy Indian Artist, Harris was born near Red Rock and reared in Ponca City. He died Monday at a Tulsa hospital.

After beginning his working life as a carpenter, Walter Harris attended the Ksan School of Northwest Coast Art in 1969. His teachers were Doug Cranmer, Robert Davidson, Bill Holm, and Duane Pasco. He eventually became an instructor himself later on.
