Born in the first decade of the twentieth century and subsequently trained as an illustrator, from the mid 1930s Walter Gotschke was the official artist to Daimler-Benz, producing all of their promotional artwork from posters to publicity brochures, and painting some of his most memorable images.

Gotschke, chief illustrator for Automobile Quarterly and Road and Track, was described by the latter as “the maestro of capturing cars in motion”.
