She was to stay there, excepting an interval in 1912–14, until after World War i. When she returned to Sydney forever in 1921, her art and ideas sprang to the front line of contemporary art and design in Australia.

Thea Proctor made her name and career as a modern tastemaker and advocate for contemporary art from the 1920s until her death in 1966. Her first illustrations were published in the short-lived Australian Magazine in 1899, in which she featured alongside artists George Lambert and Sydney Long. Lambert and Long were fellow graduates of the Julian Ashton art school, where Proctor had studied in 1896.
