Apr 04, 2005 · Most animators I have seen work use a variety of pencils and don't limit themselves to a certain kind. The main 'technical purpose' of the blue pencil as far as I know is that it's easily erasable and supposed to not show on xeroxed copies. I can't confirm that, though. Whenever I xeroxed a blue sketch I didn't get a completely blank piece of paper.

The artist can do their sketch and inking in the traditional manner and scan the page. Most scanners will detect the light blue lines. However, shifting to greyscale and increasing the contrast and brightness of the scanned image causes the blue to disappear.

Mar 28, 2010 · As for your second query, I'm guessing that a blue pencil version being available occurs where the artist has completed a blue pencil version and lightboxed it so that he/she can complete the illustration in pencil as a clean finished image without all the preliminary lines in the blue line version showing up underneath the pencils.
