William Aikman (1682-1731) was a Scottish painter. He trained with the Flemish artist John de Medina in Edinburgh. He was active from about 1705 to 1730. The John Campbell, Duke of Argyll was an important patron for Aikman and convinced him to move permanently to London in 1722.

William Aikman. (1682-1731), Portrait painter. Artist associated with 29 portraits. Born in Aberdeenshire, Aikman studied law at the University of Edinburgh. He took up a career as an artist and, by 1703, was painting portraits professionally in Edinburgh. He sold his family estate near Arbroath to enable him to travel unfettered to Europe to complete his artistic training.

William Aikman (1868-1959) Stained glass artist. William Aikman was born in Edinburgh and was an apprentice with Ballantine and Son. He moved to London in 1892 and designed windows for James Powell & Sons, working on commissions with William Richmond and J.W. Brown. Aikman left Powell's to set up his own studio in 1913.
