William Verplanck Birney (1858-1909), born in Cincinnati, was trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the Royal Academy in Munich and was one of only two Americans to sell paintings at the 1883 Munich International Exhibition.

SS 9 5/8 x 7.5 in.; DOA 17.75 x 15 5/8 in. Born in Cincinnati, Birney studied at the Massachusetts Normal School and under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He also spent four years studying at the Munich Academy. He is best known for his reflective genre paintings of figures in repose, such as the work presented here.
